HBO gets hacked despite increased security

On 26 June we posted a blog about the two-factor authentication (2FA) process that television network HBO had implemented to tighten security on its scripts. However, the company has still fallen victim to a cyber incident where attackers have breached its servers.

The attackers have already leaked unreleased episodes of Ballers and Room 104 online, as well as a script of episode four of this season’s Game of Thrones. Although the hackers appear not to be motivated by money, they have shared the stolen information with entertainment journalists and claim to have exfiltrated staff information and other sensitive internal info.

Although the scale of the breach is mainly unknown, the theft of personal data is more likely to cause serious financial and reputational damage to those concerned.

External cyber security companies have now been called to investigate, but despite many leaks in the past this is the first time that HBO has been subject to a cyber incident.
